Research Topic Functional analysis of the Pto resistance gene using gene shuffling.
Research Summary

Pto is the tomato gene that confers resistance againstPseudomonas syringae pv tomato. It works in a gene-for-gene manner and only confers resistance to bacterial strains that express the cognate avirulence genes, AvrPto or AvrPtoB. Pto interacts with AvrPto in the yeast two-hybrid system and elicits a hypersensitive response (HR) in the presence of the AvrPto protein in planta. We are using the gene shuffling technique to elucidate the regions of Pto that are necessary for interaction with AvrPto and AvrPtoB in yeast, and for downstream signaling to HR in the plant cell.
